This story may not be about the idyllic Alaska this reader had in mind. There are no sled dogs. A novice reader may not be accustomed to follow chapters that alternate between the various perspectives and side developments that weave into the ongoing narrative. Surprisingly, a notion somehow still survives which dictates that a story must progress with linear simplicity. Sitka Song is a gritty and emotionally complex story. It can not follow Aristotle's diagram of exposition, rising action, climax, falling action and resolution. The diagram is inverted. How low the story goes makes the aesthetic and relational achievement between the main characters at once striking and believable. Not much is improved. Small victories mean more than grand dramatics. Yes, there are typos and flubs in the manuscript. It was written in Alaskan by an Alaskan, in conditions that you will only understand when you see that these are analogous to the conditions where the characters in Sitka Song discover themselves. There were no editors on hand.

Her undaunted courage and creativity resonate both in her personal life and her artist's awakening.
Some of you will recognize this as an extensive rewrite of Some Go Out Singing, a novella-length piece published a few years ago in An Alaskan Trilogy. Re-written, it expanded from about 150 to 340 pages. This story of Dee Beans, her romantic and not very romantic entanglements, and her personal progress from village girl to a an artist among artists, depicts Sitka and Alaska in terms ranging from the endearing to the shocking. I have tried to show this town that I love in some of its full range of truths, from splendid to shadowy.

Extremely poor story progression. Many proofreading/editing mistakes. I was looking forward to reading a good novel about Alaska; this was one of the poorest books I have ever read.
